Mary Pickersgill Commissioned
While making preparations for the Battle of Baltimore, Major George Armistead requested a flag "...so large that the British will have no diffiulty in seeing it from a distance..." to be flown over Fort McKenry. The effort to designate the Star-Spangled Banner as the official National Anthem of the United States started with the United States Daughters of 1812.

Perhaps no other state played a greater role in the War of 1812 than New York. During the 32-month war, also known as America's Second War for Independence, the Americans fought the British on land and water from Buffalo to Plattsburgh. Historic sites from forts to battlefields to museums to the gravesite of "Uncle Sam" can be visited across the state.
